Classroom
My goal for the year is to create a positive and successful learning experience for each student. I am thrilled to be able to teach at St. Thomas the Apostle School. I am thankful for the opportunity to share in your child's education. I realize that each child is a unique gift from God and each one has his or her own special gifts and talents. I believe that part of our job as parents and teachers is to discover those talents and to help each child use them to realize his/her potential. Based on this philosophy, I try to reach each child in the way he or she learns best.
Educational Background
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Arizona State University. I have taken graduate classes at ASU and University of Phoenix and Ottawa University. I am currently in a program for my Masters Degree and Reading endorsement through ASU.
Professional Background
I worked at Saint Theresa Catholic School. I taught first grade, third grade and kindergarten. I also coached after school sports. After nine years, I transferred to the Parish office and was the Director of Religious Education. I worked with preschool through junior high students.
I am very excited as I begin my fifth year here at Saint Thomas the Apostle. Last year I moved up to the sixth grade, the students were wonderful but I am very excited to return to kindergarten.
It is a wonderful community and I am so thankful to begin another school year. I am also one of the STA Student Council Moderators working with the 7-8 graders. You may see many of them as we meet on Wednesday mornings. I also help coach in the sports program at STA for 5-8 graders.
What's Happening in KR?
Our classroom will be a place where students will grow physically, spiritually, emotionally and academically throughout the year. I will provide positive reinforcement as well as be fair and consistent in all form of discipline. We have COOPERATION and TEAMWORK in our class. Each child is taking ownership in our classroom. He/she signed the student handbook and agreed that they will follow our school rules. All of the kindergarten classes use a behavior light system. They have the colors of the traffic light to record their daily behavior.
We also read a big book Peanut Butter and Jelly. That book helped review the ordinal words first, next and last. Have your child sing the peanut song to you. In Math we are finishing up the chapter on classifying objects by size, color, shape and kind. We will soon begin patterns.
The students are earning points for great teamwork and cooperation for their team behavior. In September, the students will be bringing home their folders so that you can check the color of their day. The colors reflect their behavior throughout the day:
- Green – Student is making GREAT choices!
- Yellow – Student received a warning about his/her behavior and needs to make better choices.
- Red – Student did not follow rules and expectations after several warnings and needs to take responsibility for his/her actions. A trip to the office may occur. Parents may check the calendar in their child’s folder to check their progress.
MVP of the Week
To know more about our classmates we will draw a name on Thursday to select the MVP for the following week. They may bring in a poster sheet (it will be provided to you) to share some special pictures with the class. They will be able to bring in some items to share with the class. Please note we do not allow real animals on campus. They will also bring home our class stuffed animal for the weekend.
Volunteers
Please be sure to attend the Call to Protect sessions needed before you can volunteer. There are many ways to assist with our class; classroom helper, chaperone field trips, special art project. Sign ups will begin tonight at Open House, and on the bulletin board outside the classroom.
Birthday Celebrations
Birthdays are very special for everyone. We will honor your child on their special day. Your child may have a free dress day in honor of their birthday.
In lieu of bringing "food" treats for the students, you may prepare a birthday box; fill a bag or box with cake mix, icing, candles and any other item to donate to Saint Vincent de Paul for someone less fortunate to celebrate their special day.
Wednesday Packets
Communication is so very important. Please be prepared to look over the items in the Wednesday packet. Your entire child's work will be sent home in the Wednesday packet. In September, much of the communication will be online. (Newsletters, upcoming school events, our monthly menu, tuition information, our class newsletter "What's Happening in KR?") Please sign and return the envelopes by FRIDAY. Also, feel free to communicate with me any questions or concerns. We both want what is best for your son/daughter. Thank you for your cooperation.
I began my journey toward my teaching certificate in Flagstaff, Arizona at Northern Arizona University. I enrolled in the cohort teaching program and spent my four years teaching at local schools. The first semester of my senior year I taught at Leupp Elementary School on the Leupp Navajo reservation. It was quite an experience and I felt very lucky to have gained the experiences from my time there. I then moved back home to Phoenix to complete my final student teaching practicum. I was assigned to Hopi Elementary School in Scottsdale. I taught first grade from August to December then graduated in December of 2002.
I began as an aide at St. Thomas in 2004 and was hired the next year as a kindergarten teacher. I absolutely love and adore teaching kindergarten; it truly has been a fantastic job. I am thrilled to be back this year at St. Thomas. This is a wonderful school and I just love being a part of it.
I was married in January of 2004 at St. Theresa, where I attended elementary school. I also attended St. Mary's High School, which was where I met my husband! My husband's name is Bobby and I am sure you will see him from time to time at school events!
I am very blessed to have Shirley Vandenberg as my aide again this year. We make a great team together and I couldn't imagine working with anyone else. We are the perfect match! She provides me with a great deal of support and the kids just love her. She works very hard in our classroom and I don't know what I would do without her. I love Mrs. Vandenberg and KS is very lucky to have her!
I am very excited to be spending this next year with you and your child. I look forward to getting to know you and I invite you to join us in the various classroom activities and school events that will be taking place this year. I enjoy working closely with parents and I welcome your assistance. Whether it is volunteering in our classroom or throughout campus, assisting with field trips, or helping out with special events, your participation is always appreciated.
Thank you for your continued support and prayers. I strive to make this year one of the best and I look forward to working together ensure year a positive kindergarten learning experience for your child.
Sincerely,
Kelly Schurman
Wednesday Packets
You will find all kinds of information in your child's Wednesday Packet. I will usually have a classroom newsletter that will explain what is happening in our classroom and to let you know what will be coming up. Book orders, school pictures, campus news, order forms, field trip forms and class work will be found in your Wednesday Packet! Please remember to go through it, sign it, and send it back to school with your child each week.
Field Trips
All three Kindergarten classes will be taking three exciting field trips this year. Our classroom will be needing the assistance of six chaperones during each trip. Permission slips will be sent home a few weeks in advance and you will have the opportunity to request to be a chaperone. We ask that parents please only sign up for one trip so other parents may have the opportunity to join us. Parents and students will be provided with a sack lunch that our fabulous kitchen staff packs for us! REMINDER....All chaperones MUST complete the Call to Protect workshop before participating in any school/classroom event.
The Pick of the Litter
Each Friday I will be randomly selecting one student to be our Pick of the Litter for the upcoming week. When you child is drawn they will be sent home with a poster for them to color and answer some fun questions on. I will hang it in the classroom for the entire week and on Friday your child will have the opportunity to present some information to the class about themselves. I encourage you to send in photographs as well. I will hang them on our Pick of the Litter board! Students like this. All items will be returned to you in the condition that you sent them. Parents are welcome to come in on the Friday when their child is our Pick of the Litter to listen to their presentation. And of course, you may bring your cameras!
Zookeeper Jobs
Each week we will select classroom helpers to lend a hand in our classroom procedures. I rely on the assistance of a teacher assistant, prayer leader, clean up helpers, line leaders, snack helpers, and a door holder. We will rotate jobs throughout the entire year so each child will have the opportunity to do each job a few times. These jobs certainly build our classroom community and help students with individual responsibility! Their hard work and participation really helps me out a lot!
Daily Calendar
Each morning as a class we will meet at the calendar to begin our day. During our time at the calendar we will learn about the days of the week, months of the year, weather, seasons, numbers to 100, colors, shapes, and high frequency words. Our classroom is also in the process of building our "Lost Tooth Graph." Each time a student loses a tooth, we meet at the calendar, award them a lost tooth sticker, and graph their paper tooth on our graph.
Bags
I have made 3 bags for our classroom. They are our Birthday Bag, Tooth Fairy Bag, and Pick of the Litter Bag. On your child's birthday, on the day they loose a tooth, or when they are the Pick of the Litter you will see this canvas bag come home with them. Inside they will find pencils, bookmarks, stickers, crowns, certificates, and awards for your child to keep. A book will also be found in the Birthday and Tooth Fairy Bags. This is meant to be a "read aloud" book for you to spend the evening reading together. You will also find a journal in each bag. You will be asked to write about your birthday, what you think the Tooth Fairy does with your tooth, and the Pick of the Litter journal will be a free writing journal. Have fun with the journals. You may take pictures and place them in the journal too. Journals and books must be returned with the canvas bag the following school day! Please take care of these items; they are to last for the entire year!
Happy, Happy Birthday
I love to celebrate birthdays in KS! Each child will receive a birthday crown, sticker, and certificate on their special day! A new law began this school year in all elementary schools prohibiting snack foods or birthday treats in the classroom. Unfortunately we will no longer be able to celebrate your child's special day with a treat. In replacement of a treat, the birthday child will be allowed to spend their day at school in free dress.
I grew up right here in Phoenix, Arizona. I was lucky enough to go to school at Saint Thomas the Apostle. I proceeded on to Xavier College Preparatory and then on to the University of Arizona. I received my Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Business in 2004. I then enrolled in the Masters of Education program at Northern Arizona University and I graduated with my Masters in the spring of 2006.
Along with my Masters degree, I am also a certified Reading Specialist and a Middle School Language Arts Specialist. So, in case you were wondering, reading is my passion!!!
I am so excited about teaching your children and helping them to grow their love of reading. I look foward to working with you as well as your children this year!
Classroom Volunteers
Classroom volunteers will be needed each week. These helpers will aid with reading and activities in small group. Room # eight will need volunteers throughout the year. This will make classroom management much easier as well as give children more one on one time. Please contact me if your schedule permits you to help out. Thank you!Field Trips
The first grade classes will be taking two field trips this year. As always, we welcome parents to help chaperone. I would like as many parents as possible to have this fun opportunity. Up to six chaperones per trip will join our class. All volunteers will be asked to attend the Safe Environment class before helping on field trips or in the classroom.Classroom Jobs
Each week our class will have helpers that keep our classroom running smoothly. I like to call them my pocketful of helpers. It is an important part of building community and taking ownership of our room. I will have a library helper, line leader (boy and girl), lunch helper, teacher’s assistant, prayer leader and floor clean-up person. Your child will be able to have each job at least once!Wonderful Wednesday Packets
Each Wednesday your child will bring home a white packet full of important information. It will contain newsletters, information about upcoming school events, lunch menus, tuition information, occasionally a field trip permission slip as well as my weekly letter. Report Cards will also be included in the packet four times throughout the year. Please take time to look through the material and sign the outside of the packet near the appropriate date. Most importantly, please send the packet back to school with your child by Friday. Thank you for your cooperation. Most of the Wednesday packet will only be available online, so make sure that you check out our website weekly! If you are unable to do this, please make sure I know this so that I can make other arrangements for your Wednesday packet.Happy Birthday!
Students are given a “Free Dress Day” on his/her birthday in lieu of bringing a snack or treat. Please refer to the school handbook for the non-uniform policy. You may consider donating a special book to the classroom in your child’s name, on his/her birthday.
I am a graduate of both Michigan State University (Go Spartans!) and Arizona State University. Previously, I have taught in the Madison School District, here at St. Thomas the Apostle, and at St. Agnes School. In addition, I had the privilege of teaching overseas, both in Brighton, England, and outside of Tokyo, Japan. Each of these experiences has enriched my perspective on education and how students best learn.
My passions include my family, both at home and at STA, reading, running, Big 10 football, and traveling.
By living in other countries, I've had opportunities to absorb a variety of cultures. I resided for one year in Japan, and four months in England. I have built friendships with people all over the world that continue to this day. Some of the places I've traveled include: England, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Austria, Italy, Greece, Australia, Japan, and of course, Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico. I feel that all of these opportunites have provided a broad knowledge base that I can subtly integrate within the classroom. I have seen first hand the educational systems of other countries, particularly the emphasis placed on literacy. As a thoughtful educator, my professional responsibility is to abide by Diocesan standards and curriculum, as well as state standards.
I look forward to sharing a year of faith, learning, and skill-building with the first graders in room 7.
Wednesday Packets
Every Wednesday, a new Wednesday packet will be posted onto the school website. It will contain newsletters, upcoming school events, our monthly menu, tuition information, occasionally field trip permission slips and news – letters from me, keeping you informed about our classroom. Progress Reports and Report Cards will also be sent online in Wednesday Packets. Please take the time to look through the material and sign the outside of the packet on the appropriate date. This will help me see that we are staying informed together. If you are unable to access the internet, please make sure that you inform me of this so that I can make other arrangements for your Wednesday packet.
Book Orders
Scholastic book and software orders are sent home with your child's numerous time throughout the year. All orders need to be returned in a labeled envelope with your name on it by a specified date. All checks must be made out to the book or software order company, not STA! Thank you!
Birthday Celebrations
The students are again allowed to wear free dress on their birthday. Your child may bring a book for the classroom library or a small non-food treat for the class. I hope that this would be a fun way to celebrate your special day!!!
I graduated from ASU in 1975 with a BS degree and have accumulated more than 48 hours of graduate level studies. I am also certified as an Early Childhood Specialist. I have been teaching at STA since 1977, after substitute teaching for two years. My first class had 37 students and some probably got the better of me! Thanks to my mentor, parents and a priest, I persevered.
Along with teaching second grade at St. Thomas, I am also the campus liturgy coordinator for the school Masses. I assist each of the homerooms in practicing and preparing for the schoolwide Mass. I also coordinate the school variety show that is a venue for many of our students' performing talents.
St. Thomas has become more than a job to me. It is a family. The environment and the presence of God in my daily life make this a place I look forward to each day. I love what I do. Hopefully I pass that feeling on to my students.
Collection for Student in Chiapas, Mexico
Our class is sponsoring a student in Chiapas, Mexico so he can attend school. Each month, the class donates $25 towards the student's tuition. As an ongoing collection, we ask that children bring in some spare money whenever they can.
Thanks in advance for your generosity!
My name is Robin Perko, and I am a second grade teacher at St. Thomas the Apostle school. It is a spectacular job and ministry. My college experience is at Northern Arizona University and I have twelve years of teaching experience; five of those years being here at St. Thomas. I am married with four lovely children. My other interests include hiking, biking, and music.
I truly appreciate and enjoy the Catholic school environment. After teaching in the public schools, I have found a wonderful sense of community and respect in parochial schools. I love my profession and my Catholic faith because they hold something new for me everyday and always challenge me to become a better teacher and person. I find working with children an awesome responsibility and a whole lot of fun. I believe myself to be more of a facilitator of my students' learning-- leading them to new understandings and knowledge.
Aloha from the Super Second Grade
In Grade Two, Room 4 (also known as the SUPER SECOND GRADE) we are always learning and having fun doing it whenever possible. Most days begin with prayer, song, and a little exercise to get the brain and body going. There is a positive learning environment in which children feel comfortable to ask questions for understanding, complete assigned tasks, and try new things.
Along with learning about the basic academic subjects like reading, math, language arts, writing, social studies, and science, the children learn about their Catholic religion and acting in a Christ-like manner. St. Thomas also has great "specials" classes in which the children discover Spanish, art, music, computers, and the STA library.
I began teaching at St. Thomas the Apostle in 2008, and I can not think of a place that I would rather be. It is an incredible honor for me to be able to work with the third graders at St. Thomas as they prepare to receive the sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation. I am a very proud graduate of the University of Arizona and am currently completing additional course work at ASU in order to earn a masters degree in education.
Welcome to Third Grade
The child who enters third grade is much different than the child who leaves second grade. They grow in responsibility and in the ability to solve problems. They work on study and organizational skills.
Third graders grow closer to God, through daily prayer, weekly liturgy, and preparation for the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Confirmation. Attendance at weekend Mass is essential for our third graders who will be preparing for the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.
As the teachers of these amazing children, we strive to provide a safe and loving learning environment. We encourage the children to read lots of books. The children challenge themselves by participating in the Accelerated Reading program. Accuracy and efficiency with math facts is so important for success in math in third grade. Please practice your math facts often.
I am so glad to be part of the STA family. This is my fourth year here. My previous teaching experience was in Philadelphia, where I grew up. I graduated from Holy Family College, a small Catholic college back east. I am presently taking coursework at ASU with the intent to earn a masters degree in education. ASU is a very different experience than my small Catholic alma mater.
My husband and I enjoy gardening, and renovating our home in the West Valley.

My teaching career began in January of 1987, just a few weeks after graduating from Northern Arizona University with a B.S. in Elementary Education degree. I taught in the public school system here in the valley for the next twelve-and-a-half years, earning a Bilingual/ESL certificate, Early Childhood Education endorsement, and a Master's Degree in Educational Administration along the way. During these years, I enjoyed teaching first and second grades, many times in a bilingual classroom setting.
In the fall of 2005, I joined the staff of St. Thomas the Apostle to share a job teaching fourth grade. In the fall of 2008, I took over this position on a full-time basis.
In fourth grade, Mrs. Rigg and I share the teaching responsibilities in the following way. We each teach religion and reading to our homeroom classes. I teach all fourth graders Science and Math, while Mrs. Rigg teaches Social Studies and Language Arts to all. Students enjoy having two core teachers, and we enjoy getting to know all fourth graders.
Fourth Grade News
Our goal for the year is to not only teach, but also guide, nurture, and encourage all students so that they can do their very best and have fun in the process. We are grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of your child's life this year and pray for a year full of many successes.
A fundamental foundation of fourth grade math is mastering multiplication facts. You'll be off to a great start if you continue daily practice of these facts. The beginning of the year includes a review of addition and subtraction as well as place value and problem solving.
The beginning of the year includes an overview of geography and the strands of social studies, map skills, and landforms. Unique to fourth grade is the weekly presentation of current events.
Our year will begin with a study of earth's land. We will learn about how water, wind, and ice shape the land. We will also learn about the importance of natural resources. Look forward to some great activities!
I am a native of Albuquerque, NM with a degree in elementary education from the University of New Mexico and 75 hours of post graduate work. I taught four years in the Albuquerque public school system. Upon moving to Phoenix in 1973, I taught third grade at St. Thomas for two years. Then I was a full time mom until 1982 when I returned to teach fourth grade at St. Thomas and continue in that position.
In fourth grade, Mrs. Jacobsen and I share the teaching responsibilities in the following way. We each teach religion and reading to our homeroom classes. I teach all fourth graders Social Studies and Language Arts, while Mrs. Jacobsen teaches Science and Math to all. Students enjoy having two core teachers, and we enjoy getting to know all fourth graders.

I belong to a community of religious women called, the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. Our Motherhouse is in Ann Arbor, MI.
The Dominican Sister's of Mary established a "mission" here in Phoenix in 2005; I was happy to join the sisters here in Phoenix in 2008! It is a joy to teach 5th and 6th grade English here at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School!
Fifth & Sixth Grade English
Our 5th and 6th grade English program integrates grammar, the 6 + 1 traits of writing, the writing process, and several other aspects of writer's workshop.
Keeping in mind that grammar is foundational to writing; our major goal for English this year is to become better writers. To accomplish this goal we will be concentrating on skills included in the "6 + 1 Traits of writing."
Fifth Grade
I am delighted to be a part of the St. Thomas community and am really looking
forward to working with you and your child (ren) this year as their math and social studies teacher. This is my second year teaching sixth grade at St. Thomas. I have taught in the Bronx, New York as well. I attended Xavier College Prep, the University of Arizona, and Pace University, where I received my Master’s degree in Elementary Education.
I have an incredible passion for teaching and believe that every child is capable of becoming a “Math Master” and “Social Studies Scholar”. I will work hard to make sure that every student in my class feels successful. I welcome any questions, comments, and/or concerns. Please feel free to email me at kmarsh@staphx.org and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Fifth & Sixth Grade Math
This year, the 5th and 6th grade students of St. Thomas have the added benefit of attending smaller math classes so that their teachers can provide them with more one-on-one support.
I am blessed to be a part of the faculty at Saint Thomas the Apostle.
I am originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin where I taught for eight years. I have a Masters degree in Curriculum & Instruction and hold a Bachelors degree in Business. I have taught all subjects including U.S. History, Developmental Reading, Math, Science, and English. I taught the Gifted and Talented program, was a Special Olympics coach for three years and have several teaching awards. I am also a published author having written a book on the historical Negro Baseball League.
Prior to teaching, I was a Human Resources Manager, an Executive Recruiter, and an Expert Handwriting Analyst.
I am thankful to have been given the opportunity to continue my teaching career at such a wonderful school.
Fifth & Sixth Grade Science
I have a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. Upon my graduation, I worked for Signetics Corp. and Motorola Inc. as a process engineer in wafer fabrication for the semiconductor industry. After staying at home to raise my children, I decided to return to the workforce. I received my teaching certificate and a Masters degree in Education specializing in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Phoenix.
I have been a member of the St. Thomas the Apostle community since 2000. I have taught life science, physical science, pre-algebra and high school algebra since beginning my teaching career here. My son and one of my daughters were fortunate to attend St. Thomas.
As the assistant principal, I would like to assure you that the students of St. Thomas are very important to me. I strive everyday to see that they have a safe and secure environment in which to develop spiritually, academically and socially. I am also committed to the criteria for which St. Thomas the Apostle was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.
Junior High Honors Math & Honors Science
I am a member of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, established in 1997. Presently, there are close to ninety sisters at our Motherhouse in Ann Arbor, MI. Our Community accepted the invitation to come to St. Thomas the Apostle Parish and School in 2005. It is with great excitement that I have come to teach the junior high students.
Junior High Religion and Life Science
The junior high science program at St. Thomas the Apostle incorporates a hands-on approach to inquiry based science. Students learn by performing activities, making observations, and asking questions. Students are encouraged to use critical thinking skills to solve problems. The scientific method is explored in a wonderful laboratory environment equipped with computers, lab benches, and equipment often found only in high school settings.
I am a graduate of both Michigan State University (Go Spartans!) and Arizona State University. Previously, I have taught in the Madison School District, here at St. Thomas the Apostle, and at St. Agnes School. St. Thomas the Apostle has been a part of my life for about 40 years. I came to Phoenix for the "second round" to teach fifth grade in 1978 and have been here ever since. The only exception is my year away to deal with illness in Duluth, Minnesota. Thanks to the many good prayers and good wishes from our parish and school community here, I am back again in good health and happy to be with the St. Thomas community, this time in 8th grade part-time teaching and assisting the teachers, grades five through eight in any way I can. It is so good to be back!

Summer Reading Program
We began a summer reading program in 2002 that works in conjunction with the public libraries' summer reading program. At the end of each school year, the same summer reading forms distributed by the public library are sent home to all kindergarten through 4th grade students. Students who participate are then eligible to receive both the public libraries' prizes as well as a prize bag from the STA library.
Educational Background
Professional Background
Glad to be at STA working with your children - preparing for "global competition." In the computer lab we will be collaborating with homeroom teachers finishing class projects. I will demonstrate common shortcuts making it easier for students to maneuver around applications. I plan to present units in MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, Photo story 3 and Movie Maker: keyboarding using "All the Right Type' and testing using "typeingtest.com".
Fifth — Eighth Grade Computer Lab
Older students develop and refine the previously acquired basic skills using more advanced techniques, operations, applications, and programs. Building on previous knowledge, these students have challenging opportunities to demonstrate both content-area and computer-related knowledge and skill.
Physical Education
Our physical education program at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School is an instructional program in which students will develop a physically active lifestyle, which promotes lifelong fitness and good health. The planned curriculum of skills and concepts promotes optimal development of physical, spiritual, and mental wellness among youth – with emphasis on positive self-concept, social behavior, leadership ability and moral development.
The goal of the STA school art program is to give our students the opportunity to study different artists, art history, and techniques to enhance each student's level of creativity and to cultivate an enjoyment of the visual arts.
This is my seventh year as the art instructor at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Elementary School.

Phoenix Art Museum Children's Gallery
Art is taught to all students in grades Kindergarten through eight once a week, with class times ranging from 30 minutes for Kindergarten, to approximately 40 minutes for grades 1 - 8. In art class, students are given the opportunity to create projects that engage the creative side of their young minds. We use a variety of art media with age appropriate activities including watercolors, pastels, craypas, tempera paints, charcoal, collage, colored pencil, air dry clay, and more.
It is amazing how much can be done when students really focus on their work! If you are an STA parent, ask your child what "studio time" means. Most artwork for grades K through 4 is displayed inside or outside the classroom and then sent home. Student work for grades 5 through 8 is either displayed or collected for their student portfolios. At the end of the school year, students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 select their two best pieces of work from their portfolios. This work is displayed and judged at the annual school wide Art Show which will be held in May, 2009.
For the past six years, my students in grades 5 - 8 have also displayed their art work in the Children's Gallery at the Phoenix Art Museum. The gallery has been filled with as many projects as can fit in the space (over 250 at times!) It has been a great opportunity to display the work of our talented students in a public venue.
I have been teaching at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School for eleven years. I teach physical education to kindergarten through 3rd grade and 6th through 8th grade. It really is a great experience to work with the children in the school. In addition to my responsibilities as physical education teacher, I am also the athletic director for our after school sports program for the 5th through 8th grade students.
I have attended Catholic schools most of my life. I graduated grade school from St. Daniel the Prophet in 1979 and continued my Catholic education at Gerard Catholic High School. I graduated from Arizona State University in 1990 with a degree in Exercise Science/Physical Education. After working a few years in the corporate arena, I went back to school and finished my teaching certification at Ottawa University. I worked in the public schools for 2 years until I came to St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School in 1998. While teaching full time I returned to school and obtained my masters degree in Administration and Supervision from the University of Phoenix in 2001.
I have 4 children - Richard is in his second year at Mesa Community College, Kayla is a junior at Seton Catholic High School, Marisa is in 6th grade and Jessica is in kindergarten here at St. Thomas the Apostle.

6th – 8th grade classroom

I graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Elementary Education, and a specialization in Learning Disabilities, from Arizona State University. I have since accumulated 50 post graduate hours in computer science and reading. I have also received a Reading Specialist Endorsement and an English Language Learner endorsement from the state of Arizona.
I began my career as a teacher in 1977 with the Diocese of Phoenix, and later with the Kyrene school district in Tempe, Arizona. After three years of teaching, I elected to stay home and be a full time mother. When my youngest was in third grade, I returned to the professional world, this time teaching at St. Thomas the Apostle school in Phoenix, Arizona, where my children attended. Since then I have assumed roles as both the technology teacher and special reading teacher.
Currently, I teach small group reading classes to students in grades one through four. My classes average eleven or twelve students. I apply a multi-sensory approach to decoding and segmenting sounds and letters, which has proven to be an effective method for teaching students who otherwise struggle in the younger grades.
Designated students leave their classroom daily for small group reading/phonics instruction. The same basal reader/workbook/phonics workbooks are used as are used in the classroom.
Additionally, students in grades one, two and three learn a multi-sensory approach to phonemic awareness and reading.
I am a graduate of Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania. My teaching experience includes Catholic schools in Pennsylvania and California. I also taught at St. Agnes Catholic School in the Diocese of Phoenix.
After serving on many committees as a school parent, I started the Spanish program in 1993. This is my 16th year teaching at STA.
My husband, Tom, and my children are graduates of STA also.

We are very proud at St. Thomas the Apostle to offer music classes for all students at our school. Students in grades kindergarten through 4th grade attend class twice a week; 5th through 8th grade students attend once weekly.
Music class includes exploration of sound, voice, rhythm, beat, notation, texture, music history and storytelling through music for kindergarten through fifth grade. Sixth through eighth grades expand this curriculum and explore the world of acting, theater and production.

I am a member of the religious community called the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. The community was founded in 1997 and our Motherhouse convent is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I have degrees in music, law and education and I am delighted to have been asked to join our Sisters here at St. Thomas teaching computer technology to grades K-3.
Kindergarten — Third Grade Computer Lab
The school's young students acquire basic knowledge about computer components, programs, and processes and the fundamental skills necessary to operate computers with ease. They also learn ot navigate the Internet, conduct research, create documents, make presentations, and collaborate in team effort.
Hello! Welcome to Grade One, Room 7. My name is Mrs. Ginger Sanford. I am a native Phoenician. I grew up just a few miles south of here. I attended St. Agnes elementary school and St. Mary's High school. I am a wife (33 years) and a mother of three.
I received my Bachelor's Degree from Northern Arizona University. I also have an early childhood endorsement.
I have been part of the St. Thomas staff for sixeen years. This is my seventh year teaching first grade. We currently have 31 students.
I believe that it takes a community to raise a child. With that in mind, my aim is always to form a partnership with the parents. It is my hope that if we work together as a team, each student will reach his/her maximum potential. I use many different strategies and I try to make learning fun because I want to encourage my students to be life-long learners.
I am fortunate to have Mrs. Mary Mirasola as my teacher's aide. Together, we will work to insure that your children have the very best possible year.
Our goal is to nurture each child's individual growth, academically, emotionally, and spiritually.
I like to say that I teach the five R's (reading, writing, arithmetic, respect and responsibility.) Of course, there are a variety of "special classes" too. Your children will have Spanish, art, and music right here in the classroom. They will leave the classroom to receive instruction in computers, library, and physical education.
Some of the children will also have the opportunity to go to our reading specialist each day during our phonics/reading time to receive small group instruction. All of our students are taught the same skills.
Our classroom is equipped with a Smartboard and ten student computers. This technology allows us to enhance the learning experiences of the students.
